Broadleaf cattail

Broadleaf cattail, reed and large sedge species such as lesser pond-sedge can completely dominate bogs. An increase of these species in alkalane fens is therefore not desirable. Well planned mowing management and maintaining a nutrient-poor soil is necessary to keep the fen open. Desiccation and eutrophication are to be avoided as they cause dominant species to take over the non-competitive vegetation.
