Canadian poplar

Canadian poplar is a non-native tree species planted for its fast growth rate and timber. On very wet soils such as carrs, they often get diseased or fall over. This is because the wet soil prevents their roots from going deep.

Alluvial and riparian forests are rare biotopes, draining them and planting them with Canadian poplar is not desirable. When restoring wet forests, it is best to leave the Canadian poplars standing or partly ring them. They will thus make an important contribution to dead wood. Harvesting them often causes a lot of damage to the wet forest floor and is ecologically unnecessary.
